What does it mean to have strong fingers? It means that a harpist’s fingers play using the most efficient position and action and do it consistently. This produces a rich tone, even articulation and agility.
The beauty of harp scales is that we have so many fingering options. Try making your scales more fun and more beneficial by starting them on a different finger. Sure, 4 and 3 are usual, but why not start on your second finger or even your thumb? The difference will help make your technique more even and it will make you think!
For Parents
The Most Overlooked Value of Harp Camp
In my experience, young harpists, even those who are reluctant students during the year, find harp camp to be energizing, motivating and fun. I have never had students ask me if they could stop playing the harp. It is much more likely that I have to pull them away from their harps at night. Being in a group of others of the same age who share your love of the harp is a wonderful reward for practicing on your own all year and powerful inspiration to take your playing to the next level.
For Teachers
Give Yourself a Vacation
You deserve some down time this summer. Here’s one way to keep your harp students active and still create more summertime for you: make summer harp study a group activity. Encourage your students to work, learn and play together in group lessons, classes or workshops. You could easily plan a summer curriculum that is fun for your students and lets you enjoy your summer too. Parents also appreciate the extra freedom it gives them with their family scheduling.
