It’s Time to Play “What If”

Sometimes we forget that practice can be fun too. When practice feels like it’s getting too boring or you need a five minute energy boost, here is one of my favorite things to do.

It’s actually a “what if” exercise. What if Mozart had written “Three Blind Mice?” What if Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy” was the soundtrack for a movie western? What if the 1812 Overture were played on a music box? Let’s “what if” your music! I’ve given you two suggestions below, but feel free to try your own.

Weekly Challenge: Flippin’ Fun

Try playing one of your scales or exercises - or maybe even one of your pieces - with some experimental lever or pedal changes. Before you start to play, choose a lever or pedal or two and push them. Don’t worry about trying to create a key; just make it a random choice. Then play the exercise with your new harps or flats. You will find it makes playing it a little more tricky. You might not like the way it sounds, but then again - you might!

Wednesday Tip: Look and Listen

This quick tip will help you stay connected with your fellow musicians during a performance.

Weekend Warmup: Contrary Motion Scales

Scales are even more fun when your hands are going different directions. Give these scales a try this weekend for your warm up.
